As I’ve mentioned previously, one of my favorite architects is Eero Saarinen who designed the building in this photograph: the TWA Terminal at JFK airport. The design of the building is supposed to resemble a bird with its wings spread in flight.

Back when you could do an impromptu photo shoot at an airport terminal, I took my good friend Evana and put her in an actual TWA flight attendant’s uniform from the 1970′s and off we went, with her pretending to be a stewardess from another era. My favorite part of this image is how the setting sunlight brushes the building, highlighting the swoops and curves that Saarinen was famously known for. The terminal has since closed its doors (in October 2001) and is a New York City landmark.

Our story was inspired by the classic James Bond movie, From Russia with Love and was set to include elements of fashion, still life and architecture. The challenge was creating a storyline that wasn’t too heavy-handed but had just enough details to suggest something secretive was happening inside the home. Our ‘spies’, Scarlett and Adrian did what any official undercover agents would do: they donned wigs, typed missives on a vintage typewriter and sipped cocktails by a roaring fireplace. See all of the images here.

Gena Rowlands’s character’s descent into madness in John Cassavetes movie, A Woman Under the Influence provided the inspiration for this fashion story. Shot for City magazine, a 70s era house in Long Island provided the perfect backdrop for a woman at home going slowly batty while engaged in odd activities. The vintage orange hair dryer was discovered at a yard sale and I had the model pretend to use it outside. I love the warm colors and the mishmash of psychedelic swirls and the monochromatic dress. The silhouettes on the dress were so beautiful and reminded me of Kara Walker‘s intense artwork.

Inspired by A Woman Under the Influence, watch the trailer here.

The perfect things for a tennis buff on the perfect backdrop: a gorgeous 1954 Packard convertible.

She describes Heart as “a magazine about art and love and things that make you weak in the knees or warm behind your ribs. It’s about parties on wednesdays and getting your heart broken, about flowers and pumpkins, sunday brunches and being sad enough for your heart to break into a thousand pieces.”

Issue #3‘s theme is Paris, inspired by spending two months discovering the city on her own. It is filled with beautiful photography and design and I am eagerly awaiting my copy in the mail.

Mariell also had some kind words for me on her corresponding blog. {English translation is at the bottom.}
